NYC Local Law 144 (AI Bias Law)

NYC Local Law 144, commonly known as the AI Bias Law, is legislation enacted by New York City to regulate the use of automated employment decision tools (AEDTs) in human resources. Effective from July 5, 2023, the law requires employers and employment agencies in NYC to conduct annual bias audits on any AI-driven tools used for hiring or promotion decisions. These audits aim to assess whether the tools have a disparate impact on candidates based on protected characteristics such as race, ethnicity, or gender. Employers must also provide candidates with prior notice about the use of such tools and allow them the option to request alternative evaluation methods or accommodations.
